Walk in closet is an important part of house. The design of it may be vexed to some house owners. If you plan to build or renovate your walk in closet, it’s better to make a draft design for it, since you are the one know yourself best.
The walk in closet design is starting from the room measuring. The shape, length, breadth, ceiling height and the locations of windows/doors should be measured and drawn down on papers.
After measurement, you need to consider the function and who will use it. If this walk in closet is a part of a bedroom, then there should be space for bedding and sheets. If it is shared by a couple or siblings, there should be separated sections for each person.
After dividing the separated zones for each person, you should make a rough survey about how many and what kinds of clothes each person has.
Then you can start the walk in closet design according to the space and the numbers of clothes.
Normally, 1-meter-wide hanging rod can accommodate about 40 shirts or 10 coats and it need space about 1 meter high. The long coat and one-piece dresses should be hanged and need space at least 1.5 meters high. Besides, a shelf (40cm wide by 40cm high) can store about 15 folded shirts. A drawer (60cm wide) can store about 10 shirts or almost all socks.
So, if you prefer hanging clothes rather than folding the clothes, you should plan more space for hanging rods, or make two rods up and down. If you don’t have enough space to hanging all the clothes, add more shelves to store them. And don’t forget to reserve space for a group of drawers for socks, underwear, scarfs and other items.
Please notice that, not every space of closet is accessible easily. For common people, to reach the space over 2 meters high, they may need a stool or small ladder; to find the things in the space lower 0.8 meter, they need to bend over; things in the blind corner are also hard to get.
That’s why we suggest putting your usual wears and clothes of the season in the space from 0.8 to 2 meter high. Others are folded and stored above or beneath to save more space and to make the walk in closet design neat and practical.
You should not only to plan the space for the existing clothes, but also need empty space in case of need.
If the walk in closet is big enough, a dressing table and a full-length mirror are recommended
